How to Make Easy Homemade Pizza Dough
(Actual recipe with measurement is detailed at the bottom of post in recipe card)
Key Ingredients
- Unbleached Bread Flour – may substitute with all-purpose flour or use equal amounts of bread and all-purpose flour.
- Active Dry Yeast – may substitute with instant/rapid acting yeast. Just make sure to follow the instructions provided on the packet.
- Warm Water – water should be warmed to 110-115F (43-46C). Anything warmer than that temperature range will kill the yeast and dough will not rise.
- Sugar
- Salt
- Oil
To Make Easy Homemade Pizza Dough
- Whisk – in a medium mixing bowl, add the flour and salt. Whisk to combine.
- Mix – in the bowl of a stand mixer, add the warmed water, sugar and yeast. Whisk to combine and allow the yeast to activate, about 8-10 minutes. You will know when yeast is properly activated when mixture appears foamy and takes on a strong fermented-like aroma.
- Knead – add oil and dry ingredients into the bowl with yeast mixture. With the dough hook attached on stand mixer, set the speed to low and mix ingredients together until a dough starts to form around the dough hook attachment. At this point, increase mixer speed to medium high and knead dough for 6 minutes. You will know when dough is ready when you press into it and it bounces back.
- Transfer – add a small amount of oil to a large mixing bowl and grease the base and sides of the bowl. Transfer easy homemade pizza dough to greased bowl. Turn and flip dough in the bowl to ensure all sides of the dough is coated in oil before covering the bowl with plastic wrap.
- Rise – allow easy homemade pizza dough to rest and rise in a warm area of the kitchen for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Deflate – dough by gently knocking it down before transferring to a lightly floured clean work surface.
- Roll – easy homemade pizza dough into desired shape. Alternatively, easy homemade pizza dough may be hand stretched into desired shape.

How to Store Unbaked Easy Homemade Pizza Dough
Unbaked easy homemade pizza dough may be tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, placed in an airtight container i.e. large dated ziplock bag, and stored in the freezer for up to 1-3 months. When ready to use, thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
Tips for Successfully Making Easy Homemade Pizza Dough
- Properly Measure Out Ingredients – this is particularly important regarding the measurement of the flour. To ensure that the correct amount of flour is measured out for this recipe you may either use a scale to weigh out the flour (my preferred method) or use the spoon and level method to spoon flour into the measuring cup and use a knife or offset spatula to remove excess flour from the top of the measuring cup.
- Check the Date of Ingredients – since recipe relies on yeast as the raising agent, make sure to check the date and freshness of yeast. You will know that yeast is good to use once it is activated. To activate yeast, mix it in warm water with a little sweetener added i.e. sugar, honey or molasses and allow to sit for 8-10 minutes. If mixture takes on a foamy appearance with a strong fermented-like aroma, you are good to go. If it does not, then yeast is not good to use.
- Warm Water to Correct Temperature – perhaps the most important tip! If water is too warm/hot, it will kill the yeast and pizza dough will not rise. I highly recommend using a digital kitchen thermometer to determine what the temperature of the water is before whisking in the yeast. For active dry yeast the target temperature to activate the yeast is 110-115F (43-46C).
